Contemporary rugs help define the theme and color palette of a room. But they do more – they protect floors and absorb foot clatter and even the stomping of your kids. A modern rug protects your floors from everyday wear and tear and supports your feet with a soft surface, Designer rugs add a splash of color and pattern to your bedroom or living room. When shopping for a rug, make sure to consider the size of the rug (5 x 8 is the most common rug size), the weave and material of the rug, and most importantly, its design. If you’re looking to complement a modern style, look for a modern rug with bold patterns, like chevron or stripes, or abstract designs that enhance your other furnishings.

Materials
The material your rug is made of is the biggest factor that influences it’s feel, durability, and price.

Wool

Wool is one of the most popular rug materials due to its softness, durability, and stain resistance. A modern wool rug naturally insulates, keeping heat in your home, and the cold outside of it. Plus, wool is natural material. Imagine how much more comfortable you’ll be when you no longer will you have to walk on your frigid hardwood floors after getting out of bed in the morning.

Modern Cotton Rugs: Cotton doesn’t quite have the durability and natural stain resistance of wool, but is very low maintenance and can just be thrown into the wash for a cleaning. Because they’re so easy to maintain, cotton area rugs are great for parts of the home that see a lot of traffic and dust, like entryways and bathrooms.

Modern Rug Patterns + Designs
The hallmarks of a contemporary rug are its unique patterns and designs:

Modern Chevron Area Rug: The chevron pattern is made up the consecutive V pattern, and actually has origins in military uniforms. The black and white chevron rug is particularly popular, but be sure to browse the wide assortment of colors and materials to choose from to give your room a modern chic feel.

Modern Striped Rug: Clean lines and minimalist design epitomize modern design, so a striped rug is a great choice any modern home. You can opt for a simple two color design, or go for a more abstract multi-colored modern striped rug that is more reminiscent of a painting. It’s a great way to add complementary or contrasting colors to a room.

Modern Quatrefoil Rug: Quatrefoil is a pattern that you see incorporated into a lot of modern decorative pillows, rugs and other textiles. Look for variations of the traditional quatrefoil design (which generally just includes curves) such as the barbed quatrefoil design. It’s best to pick a simple color combination and let the bold lines of the design speak for themselves.
